Are you worried about your child? Being a parent and raising children is supposed to be one of the greatest joys of our lives. No one tells us that it is also one of the hardest things we’ll ever do.

Kids don’t come with an owner’s manual, so sometimes it’s really hard to know what they need. There are SO many things that can impact their development, their learning and their wellbeing.

If you’re worried about your child, but trying to tell yourself everything’s okay, why not check in with an expert?

If everything’s okay, you’ll figure that out and feel better. And if it’s not, the sooner you get help the better – for your little one, and for yourself.

What is counseling for children?

Child counseling is a type of child therapy performed by licensed counselors, psychologists, or therapists that focuses on children who are struggling with issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, changes in the home such as divorce, or other stressful situations.

At Young Sky Counseling, I offer compassionate counseling and work together with parents and children to help your child identify and cope with any issue or issues they are experiencing in a healthy way. Seeking help for your child is the best thing you can do for them, and I’m here to help.

About your child’s therapy sessions

It is important that you speak to your child before attending therapy so they will understand that therapy helps them with their thoughts, emotions, feelings, and any problems or worries that they may have. Encourage them to consider counseling as a chance to talk, get support, have fun, learn, and feel better, so they can do better outside of therapy.

At your initial consultation, I will meet with you and your child to ask basic questions, understand your child’s history and current struggles, and answer any questions you may have. Both parents and/or caregivers are invited to participate and provide any information that will help your child progress. During the course of our counseling sessions, we are also happy to consult with your child’s pediatrician or teacher with your written permission. I’m are here to help in any way I can, so let me know how to make you and your child feel more comfortable while visiting with me.

When to consider children’s counseling

Emotional and social struggles can occur in all shapes and forms, and children’s challenges can happen for several reasons. Children go through difficult times just like adults, where they may need guidance, someone to talk to or just to listen, or help in any other way. Some children deal with bullying, stress at school, grief, anxiety, or friend strains. Child go through many transitions as they grow and are sometimes afraid or embarrassed to talk to their parents. However, nobody knows your child like you do, and there are some signs to watch out for to know if you should consider talking to a child therapist.

Here are some of the changes that signal therapy may be helpful for your child:

  • Changes in sleeping or eating habits

  • Engaging in destructive behavior

  • Increased physical complaints

  • Withdrawal or isolation

  • Extreme feelings of worry, sadness, anger, or resentment

  • Frequent talks about death

If your child’s behavior starts to disrupt your family or their school work, then it may be time to consult with a child therapist.

It is also a good idea for your child to see a counselor when parents are getting divorced, dealing with the death of a loved one, moving or changing schools, having problems at school, after physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, or after experiencing another traumatic event.

There is help available for your child, and you are not alone. I’m here to help.
