Learning Services

At Young Sky Counseling, we offer a variety of types of testing for all ages that are designed to help you gain a deeper understanding of what is getting in the way of your child reaching their full potential. The testing is individualized, thorough, and detailed and our psychologist will work with you to determine which type of evaluation is most appropriate for your child.  Once testing is complete, we provide an in-depth road-map as to how to best tap into your child’s strengths and help them succeed in a variety of environments. We will collaborate with you, as well as with any school, tutors, or other professionals, to help you use the test results to better understand and empower your child.

As a parent, you may be wondering why your child is having a hard time in school, why learning does not seem to be coming easily to your child, and/or why your child is struggling to reach their potential. Or maybe a doctor or teacher suggested that you get an evaluation for your child.
In these situations (and many others), a psychoeducational evaluation may be the answer. Psychoeducational evaluations offer explanations for your child’s struggles and provide recommendations for specific interventions and/or accommodations to meet your child’s needs.

What are the goals of psychoeducational testing?

  • To obtain information about your child’s learning style and academic strengths and weaknesses
  • To assess for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD / ADD) and/or executive functioning deficits
  • To test for learning disabilities, such as Reading Disorder/Dyslexia, Disorder of Written Expression/Dysgraphia, Nonverbal Learning Disability, Math Disorder and Auditory Processing Disorder
  • To document the need for accommodations in school or on standardized tests
  • To document eligibility for an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan
  • To develop individualized recommendations to promote academic success
  • To explain behaviors such as inattention, poor organization, hyperactivity, low motivation, homework struggles, impulsivity, or low frustration tolerance
  • To understand poor school performance and/or academic decline
At Young Sky Counseling, we work with children who are underperforming or struggling at school. We have deep experience with children who have mild to severe disabilities in overcoming obstacles to learning and classroom productivity. We address learning challenges by offering highly refined solutions to your child’s specific needs. We also assist you as the parent to better understand your child’s learning challenges.
All children need love, encouragement and support. For kids with disabilities, such positive reinforcement can help ensure that they grow with a strong sense of self-worth, confidence and the determination to keep going even when things are tough.
In searching for ways to help children with learning challenges, remember that you are looking for ways to help them help themselves. Your job as a parent is not to “cure” the learning challenge. At Young Sky Counseling, we will provide you with the social-emotional tools he or she needs to work through challenges. In the long run, facing and overcoming a challenge such as a learning disability can help your child grow and become more resilient.

Psychological testing can determine if your child’s problems are related to any of the following:

  • Learning Disabilities, such as Dyslexia
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Executive Dysfunction
  • Processing Speed Deficits
  • Auditory Processing or other Language Weaknesses

  • Nonverbal Learning Disability (NLD/NVLD)
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorders, such as Autism
  • Social Skills Deficits
  • Sensory Processing Sensitivities
